Guided vocal warm-up, step by step

Warming up before you sing or record keeps you from straining and helps your first notes come out in tune. This routine walks you through it, from your body to your pitch, and adapts to your voice type. Go at your own pace; the full routine usually takes 10 to 15 minutes.

The steps

  1. Body: posture, loose shoulders, neck and jaw. A couple of yawns to open the throat.
  2. Breathing: breathe in for 4 counts into your belly and let the air out on an even "sss", with a timer to guide you.
  3. Lip trills and sirens: "brrr" with your lips and a hummed "mmm", sliding from low to high. The app shows your comfortable zone so you don't overdo it.
  4. Five-note scale: you hear do-re-mi-fa-sol-fa-mi-re-do and sing it back. Each round goes up a half step, and the keyboard shows which notes you hit.
  5. Pitch: sing the tonic, fourth and fifth of a key and hold each one inside the green band.
  6. Diction: tongue twisters and "pa-ta-ka" to loosen your tongue and lips.
  7. Before you sing or record: hydration, mic distance and a check of your microphone gain.

Why warm up your voice

Your voice relies on small muscles that, like any others, work better once they're warm. A good warm-up starts in the middle of your range, with no effort, and expands it gradually. That's why this routine never takes you higher or lower than feels comfortable: if a round of the scale starts to feel tight, that's where you stop.

For singers who record

The last step is for anyone about to record: it reminds you how far to stand from the mic and lets you check your input gain first, so the take isn't clipped or too quiet.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a vocal warm-up be?

10 to 15 minutes is usually enough before a rehearsal or a recording. If you're short on time, don't skip the sirens and the scale.

Does it work for male and female voices?

Yes. Pick your voice type in Settings and the scale and pitch notes adjust to your range.

What should I avoid before singing?

Skip ice-cold drinks and dairy right before, and don't shout or push for high notes without warming up.

Is it free?

Yes, and you don't need an account. The free version includes some practice time every day; if you want unlimited practice you can upgrade to c4nta Pro.
